Born in Barcelona, Spain, Rosa Mercedes is an internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer who Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times calls “sexy and hypnotically precise”, and The Coral Gables Gazette calls “incomparable”. Featured by dance companies, dance festivals and symphony orchestras throughout the United States and Europe, her extensive work in opera has been seen on the stages of companies such as The Metropolitan Opera, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Seattle Opera, Atlanta Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Baltimore Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Florentine Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Dallas Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Washington Summer Opera, Tulsa Opera, Palm Beach Opera and many others, in repertoire that includes Salome, Samson et Dalila, Aïda, La traviata, Carmen, Die Zauberflöte, Faust, Rigoletto, Lucia di Lammermoor, Don Giovanni, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Turandot, Don Quichotte, Il trovatore, The Bartered Bride, La bohème, Così fan tutte, Hänsel und Gretel, Un ballo in maschera, The Merry Widow, La Gioconda, Die Fledermaus, L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Roméo et Juliette.Ms. Mercedes offers private coaching sessions to established, professional singers designed to give them a greater physical vocabulary specific to roles such as Carmen, Escamillo, Salome, Butterfly, Olympia, Dulcinea (Don Quichotte), Dalila and any role that has particular movement needs. In addition to her expertise in many styles of dance, she has become one of the most sought-after coaches for singers preparing roles that require acquiring the technique, the flavor and the beauty of Spanish dance and flamenco. Diario las Americas hailed her as “one of the most authentically Spanish artists I have seen, both for her movement and for her domination of the dance”, and Dance Magazine has praised her “virtuoso castanet work”.A sought after choreographer on the world’s leading opera stages, Ms. Mercedes teaches master classes and workshops in movement for singers, including recently for the young artist programs of the Florida Grand Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Tulsa Opera, Sarasota Opera, Aspen Music Festival and the New World School of the Arts. Through her movement for singers classes, Ms. Mercedes specializes in helping young singers to develop physical freedom and expressiveness that is at the core of the creation of complete characters.

Ms. Mercedes serves on several grant panels and is a dance panelist and master teacher for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.
